Post why new releases are OP
I guess a lot of people don't understand WHY new weapons are OP, instead most only think of HOW.

Here's the business strategy in action:

~release unbalanced equipment.
~let it sit for a while, people who see that it's good will have a much higher likelihood to buy.
~after the initial surge of purchases starts to die down, nerf the gun and reduce the price.

Give it a week, it'll be fine. You're going to see this with most new weapons.
Take a deep breath.

I am going to stick to my naive view on the world and not believe that's the case.

Not everything has to be a conspiracy. I get the feeling that HiRez doesn't currently have to TRICK anyone into buying Gold.

Nobody said anything about conspiracy, it is a business model, and he is right.

But actually it makes alot of sense. It gets all the people using the class want to get it quickly to cash in BEFORE it's nerfed and it makes the people without the weapons want to buy something to outdo it

Eh, that's a reasonable theory that makes good business sense, but I think I would disagree. I've been with hi-rez a while (in GA). I rarely participate in public forums or anything like that, but I like to watch in the background. I feel though, that for this instance, most Tribes users would enjoy the plasma rifle just for nostalgia reasons. I alone would have bought it for that cool T2 crosshair.

I also bought the skin, because it looked nice. Because I bought the skin with gold, I went ahead and bought a bundle with everything in it with the skin I wanted just to save some time. I'm sure I'm not alone there. The power of the weapon paid little heed to my reasoning for buying it, after-all as this is an online game, weapons are always likely to change in the next patch or hotfix.

Another reason this is unlikely is that the weapon can easily be purchased with experience. Most of the people that buy weapons with gold are buying the bundles already, or (like me) are just throwing money at Hi-Rez like candy because they can justify it as a pay to play game.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but I don't think demonizing Hi-Rez as greedy is justifyable either. They're clearly sticking to a free to play style, and I'm sure most of their money would come with or without the OP weapons. After all, I would have spent the same amount of gold on a raider bundle even if a new primary weapon wasn't even included. Maybe I'm alone, I don't know...

I pretty much don't buy anything new on any game purely for this reason.
If you get pissed off they changed it, well that's your fault for being so quick to buy it.
They have to test it somehow if they aren't gonna test it in private servers.

My intention was never to demonize HR, however, it's necessary to look at a business as a business, not a bunch of guys who want to be your pals. There is a need for profits, and anyone who wouldn't use strategies in their business would likely never keep the business running for long.

I understand that the fact that new implements are slightly overpowered does not absolutely point to the fact that people will buy it, but it will absolutely increase sales. The stuff can be unlocked with experience, sure, and I had 200k sitting around to unlock most of the new stuff, myself. However, most people who think that unlocks grant an edge are people who have less experience in the game, and presumably, less xp to spend. This is the demographic that this business tactic targets.

You also address a lot of specifics about the raider gear, but i'm talking about new releases as a whole, not semantics about the reticule. Also, the vanity skins don't really apply to what i'm talking about, as they have no real effect on gameplay. That's an entirely different 'front' that HR is utilizing to maximize profitability.

This happens with all games, because you can NEVER tell how game changing something will be until the masses use it.

"this weapon is f*** DESTROYING me, maybe i should buy it too?"

the response that Hi-Rez hopes people have. Most likely scenerio, then nerf it so people have fun eventually.
