Probably a conflict between Valve and Hi-Rez over which company gets to monetize your information by data mining it and selling it to Twitter or whoever else wants to pay. Similar to the reason EA didn't put BF3 on Steam. Although in that case EA told you up front in their terms of use what they were going to do.

Hi-Rez never gave an answer as to what data their "Hi-Rez Patch Service" sends over a TLS encrypted channel to Twitter when the game launches. I'm gonna dig into that some more with an API hook monitor or something. I need to figure out how to intercept the data at the application level before it is encrypted for transport over the network.

BF3 wasn't on Steam because EA is trying to push Origin on everyone. Its direct competition, so you know they would never allow it. Some people have forced it so it'll work through Steam, but chaining the launch sequence (aside from being kind of idiotic) required fiddling so the 2 overlays wouldn't conflict with each other.

Global Agenda is on Steam, HiRezBart said in a TribesCast match one time that he saw no reason T:A would be any different.

As it stands I already have T:A plugged into Steam but having it supported natively would be cool.

T:A in Steam... is this true? I wish devs say NO. Steam is a miserable spawn of crippled zombie llama. If you get what i mean.

If Ascend will be available to play only through this "service", i'll be forced to abandon this awesome game forever T__T

This opinion made sense back in 2003.

At first I though that would be a good idea, but since then the launcher app for T:A has gotten many updates and have been streamlined very significantly, to the point where it means no inconvenience at all.

If anything putting it on steam would just make things more complicated.

Plus the more time i don't have to have steam running for no apparent reason, the better.

Hows the payment model set up? They originally started with a full game cost + subscription, then moved to F2P/Micro-transaction later on.

Sounds like Gabe pwned you for hacks and you're too retarded to make a new account.

If TA doesn't get on steam then it's their biggest mistake.

P.S. I don't thinkyou guys are aware that half of the free 2 play steam games have their own launchers. crimewars , and ai fleet I can think of off the top of my head. (or atleast one of those and another I've played before).

Being on steam != you can't use your own launcher

I've only played the 2 from 3-Rings and Steamworks freebies (Alien Swarm is still epic if you can get a team together). The question would be how many of those have Steamworks integration AND independent payment.

There is no harm in putting TA in Steam (but still avaiable in the usual indipendent client), if you look at this matter in Hi-Rez's eyes, Steam will bring a lot of new players and potential income.
I support this because thanks to Steam I was able to aknowledge the existence of Hi-Rez and I bought Global Agenda in a sale when it had massive f2p limitations.

I'll gladly switch nickname with something better if it'll be possible but, I can't stand spending gold for something like this.

Spiral Knights Steam account Can't:
- Login without Steam client installed, and user registered on the system*
-- (Where as normal accounts just need a working web browser, or a cache of the files and specially crafted shortcut.)
- Make Energy (cash currency) purchases without a working Steam overlay (again requiring steam client to installed, AND the game running)
- Fund the Steam wallet unless Steam can accept your desired payment method. Most countries don't use Credit cards for this type of service.
- And the most critical problem with Steam on F2P.... You can't play the game in certain countries due to region locks in Steam. AND Steam can't accept payment to fund the wallet in certain countries due to various Legal restrictions, some being related to Micro Transactions, others due to distribution rights.
- As far as I know, you can't convert a Steam enabled account to the game's basic account due to technical reasons and possibly Steam agreements.

None of these problems are problems for me as I always have Steam running, and effing LOVE the Steam overlay. I already run T:A through Steam for the overlay alone.

And Steam region locking doesn't affect me in the slightest.

I know these are problems for some people, but don't make it out like they're problems for everyone.

Post Re: TA on Steam
I don't know about steamworks. I didn't really look in to it at all I know it's popular for Tf2 and all, but my point was that as a steam junkie the first thing I do each week is look at their new f2p games (if any).

There are some I tried that have their own launchers independant of steam (more than one to be honest, I've tried each game on there and atleast two have their own launchers).

One thing people will do is try free stuff. That's my point. With 2-4 million avg daily people on steam why would you NOT want that kind of market? It's not like the hi-rez launcher is going to detour anyone !

I don't got any gripes with Steam. It gives me lots of games free or at big discounts ( I only buy on sales) but most all games I own , including T:A , wouldn't of happened if not for steam (either from friends there or whatnot).

Adding it to Steam would exponentinoally increase the userbase, and I think that's a good thing. I think like mentinoed with GA on there it will be ok. I also want to say in one of the dev video things or maybe one of their posts I heard steam intergration mentioned.

We'll see, but I really think it would beniifit the game and their wallets without question.

Lastly, if it's on steam it doesn't mean it won't be on the current places to download. There's no reason it has to be "all or nothing"
