I can assure the DepthOfField value does not work as you might think, and I was not expecting it myself
it does not have anything to do with actual depth of field as you would expect, if set to false it disables a LOT of effects
try it yourself

Yea, depthoffield definitely doesn't do what it is described. Turning it off gives the game a layer of haze. It seems like it has something to do with lightning mostly.

DepthofField determines the focal distance of objects rendered within your PoV and tries to mimic how the human eye works; It has nothing to do with lighting (although lighting will intensify or mute the effects) and everything to do with blurring effect of objects at distances from your character "FOCUS_Position".

Here's some examples of what it means that I just cannot describe any better:

They definitely broke it. It used to work as how you described. As I was experimenting last night, I kept wondering why my lighting was going all weird like I turned off all the shaders or something and DepthofField was the culprit.

True on the left, false on the right.

The only thing changed here was depth of field.

I suppose that true is adding more clarity to the foreground, but false is removing clarity from everything and making the entire game look washed out and dark.

And that is exactly what DoF is supposed to do: Make the foreground clearly lit and focused while everything else is muted and dull. This however can be offset by changing/turning down shadows and increasing lighting effects though.

In any case, I made the OP to help people understand what the effects DO, not what they should be set as... My settings are my own and I just shared them as a "suggestion" based on my performance testing for best features + Max FPS gains to give people an idea of what they can set them to.

The Spreadsheet is there to help you find the settings best for your game play style.

Depth of field true seems to work as intended. Clearer foreground, muted background.
Its false that is the problem, it just looks like ass. All of it, everything.

I prefer depth of field false. Game looks so whited/blue-tinted out with it enabled. I don't get that muddy blank look that you guys are experiencing when you turn it off. Are you turning it off without disabling all of the other garbage in the engine along with it?

I am running on mostly very high, with a few minor tweaks.

Both tribes.ini settings and the video card type (ATI Vs nVidia) make a difference in how Depth of Field (DoF) is seen on ones screen. I too prefer it off because it adds too much detail and darkness for my liking.

I have a Nvidia chipset. With DepthofField=True find that everything gets very whited out/blue tinted on a map like Katabatic, and it's hard to see any other hues. DepthofField=False gives me better contrast overall. I also play with beyond minimal specs. Game still looks fine to me, but it's not eye-candy pretty. It's performance. Then again, I've played Quake 3 for the last decade and we play with less than DOS graphics, so... heh biased. I don't get off on graphics like the Calluhdooty people do. :>
