I guarantee you that the role you're most interested in is the one you'll be the best at.

While I partially agree with the rest of your post, I have issues with that sentence.

Most players are interested in being a cool sniper guy, but most of those aren't willing to put the needed effort to be good at it. They would be more useful to the team using a Headhunter to "snipe" medics or spamming the point from afar using a Longbow.

You can check agendastats: there are way more Recon characters than Robo characters, and still, the Robotics class has more playtime than Recon.

What that says to me is that plenty of people go Recon and change classes when they realize it's not what they thought it'd be and/or the class sucks.

the issue isn't spec...it's the skill gap

more people need basic fps 101 skills

LoSing, juking, dodging, never running or jetting in straight lines, sweep sniping, tracking, target prioritizing, choosing the right weapon for the situation, situational awareness, lag leading, etc...basic basic stuff

/sigh

freakin' tab target EQ clones are ruining gamers

^this and players with bad ping, fps, ancient artifacts for pc,mouse and keyboards will make you incompetent.

Nice guide.

Keep updating the OP with helpful and productive information, and it will stay a sticky.

I HAVE A NAME.

And although I have ignored this thread for months, I have finally updated it. Sorry...

Also I like how this thread that I basically ignored has twice as many views than my AvA video thread which I spent more than 10 hours on I'm guessing. :P

How about a list of basic .ini files editing? Things like enabling overhealing (for nanite medics) or disabling mouse acceleration.

Robos: Your turret will not shoot, or target through you, if your turret is trying unsucsefuly to plow the assault with a medic on him, step in front of the laser causing the turet to break los and target someone esle, if your lucky, it will pick the medic, if not, some other more squishy smuck gets to die.
you have the best backstab in the game with power sap, when someone tries to break your stuff and leavs there back exposed use it, guns dont fire without energy, and its super easy to outheal melee damage.

Recons: if your a sniper, you want acuracy return rate, as that determines the fire rate of you sniper rifle.
For bombercons, you are not helping if you just hang out stealthed after throwing all your bombs, use your d*** smg.
A shater is not going to catch players, unless you hit them with an emp bomb first

DO NOT roll a recon or robo as your first character. You will be really bad at it.

This is just bad advice. Make your first character the class you're most interested in or suffer the consequences.

no it isn't

recon and robo rely far more on map knowlege and positioning than the other 2 classes. it is extremely likely that a new player will have a much harder time with one of those 2 classes on a map that is new to them than a medic or assault would.

that said there is no reason you are limited to one character
