The evidence is right in front of you. Right now there are plenty of custom servers and yet NO ONE plays on them except for pug servers or clan servers. Play now is just too easy and it's right there.

or the more likely answer is "noone wants/needs them". How about that? People enjoy the game as is, without modifications and without important admins harassing players or trying to teach them to play.
You want to force all players who does not need/want custom servers playing there. No good idea.

Oh yes, people enjoy the game as it is. They don't leave after playing less than 20 hours, they definitely don't. The game isn't dying faster than GA did.

You are completely right, all the evidence goes in your favour.

I think you're missing an important point:

Without conformity in servers we'd be looking at each server being different from the next. It would be really, really confusing to anyone looking to play a game, and so what do they do? They go to the "Official" servers, and then they think, "This game is not fun" and they leave.

The first and most important step is balancing and fixing the OFFICIAL game, otherwise this is going to turn into mod after mod after mod and it'll be a huge mess of servers all playing differently. We don't need a Civil War.

Look at a game like CS, I can scroll through countless servers and the variations used are almost always the same. With T:A, and what people have been saying, the variations would likely be extensive. We'd have too many, and I believe this would damage the game.

I think the Base Game needs to be fixed before any of this happens.

No, i'm not bad. Some people can just recreate bugs easier than others.

No offense, I just thought this was hilarious.

Except it has been like this in every single game to date. Besides, official Hi-Rez servers could have a flashy and shiny icon right by their name so the players that can't read server names like [default rules], [no strikes], [shrike only] can still get into a match even though they boast a 1-digit IQ.

But that's my point. If they didn't like Official Servers before, they'd go to them, and then what? "Oh, it's the same... ugh... see ya."

It's best to have a good, popular game to start with that people THEN mod and alter, as opposed to a game that is decent, but doesn't retain many players, that people then mod and alter.

My point is that players that can't even parse something as simple as a f*** server list aren't even worth keeping. I don't think anyone that has troubles doing even the simplest tasks like that can coordinate in a team and be an intelligent teammate.

And vice versa. If you have people that can contribute to the Tribes experience of teamwork, they won't have a problem selecting a default server.

EDIT: since you actually have to pay money for a server, you won't have an abundance of useless servers with retarded settings. If you can't think of/mimic a popular setting, there's no point in renting a server because you'd effectively be wasting money.

Fair enough.

How would you fix the eternally empty custom servers?

Post Re: Server Browser
the t;a ui has a real problem with conveying importance. everything is listed top down, completely homogeneous fonts and styling, which means that the thing on top must be the most important. think of any website you regularly use, how many of them put completely separate categories of things in a vertical list?

play now provides a completely consistent experience. i personally don't want to be bothered with dealing with every server's obnoxious nuances, they simply don't provide enough of a difference in experience to justify the pain of dealing with the potentially obnoxious {rules,admins,rotations,culture,...} of any particular server, because i simply don't care about it. i just log on to crush noobs, the only way i'll ever get a decent experience is in a pickup (and even those tend to be pretty trashy in terms of game quality).

the very idea of moving to a server-browser only system is ridiculous, it's not that games have been so dumbed down that people no longer comprehend a server browser, it's that matchmaking is way easier to use, even if you can handle slogging through a server list.

extending the matchmaker to include a proper party system, smoothing out the joining process, adding preferred/banned map lists, fixing the god awful region system, improving the rules, and straight up improving the game are all far more important and useful than the nostalgia trip that is a (potentially mandatory?!?) server browser.

making the basic flow for getting in to the game more complicated is certainly not the answer.

What about something like a current average player level in the server browser so its easy (and quick) to find one close to your level.

I am all in for having a server browser though - quick join continuously frustrates me

Post Re: Server Browser
How about we discuss a few ideas? If play now has to stay:

1. Play Now becomes something mainly for new players. After rank 10ish you will get a message with something like "WARNING: Play Now is intended for new players. Players over rank 10 will not gain XP. Use the server browser! [Continue anyway?]"

or

2. Play Now picks a random hi-rez server/custom server for you from servers on the browser (hopefully you would be able to use filters to narrow down the type of game you want). Also there should be a way to view the server info from in game to see if you want to stay on the server or not.
