I would say play every class to lvl 30 and then buy an OC of the class you choose after. No way you dont have 30k tokens after 4 classes to lvl 30.

DO NOT roll a recon or robo as your first character. You will be really bad at it.

This is just bad advice. Make your first character the class you're most interested in or suffer the consequences.

no it isn't

recon and robo rely far more on map knowlege and positioning than the other 2 classes. it is extremely likely that a new player will have a much harder time with one of those 2 classes on a map that is new to them than a medic or assault would.

that said there is no reason you are limited to one character

Maybe if you play assault.. as a medic it seems all I ever do is follow/stare and an assaults backside.. Don't have time to see much of the maps. Are there any sites that have take the time to sketch out the various maps so folks can look at it offline or not in a match?

Medic is actually the best class to play first. You may not see every nook and cranny of the map, but you can learn a lot of stuff while watching people. After all, as a medic you should be watching what your team and the op4 is doing so you know who to heal, what to use, and when.

Things to watch for:

What makes good players good? For example, good assaults don't sit on their butt right-clicking. They left-click and move. What makes an effective bomb drop? Usually dropping it just outside of the point so people don't see it; drop it on the middle of the point, and people fly away.

Where do robos set-up turrets? Robos usually set up turrets in the same places over and over. Find these spots, look for turrets, and when you robo you can use the same spots (if they are good places).

Where people put beacons. Same deal as turrets.

there is no cure for ignite or stun!

This coming from a so-called medic. I think I've figured out why I lose so many merc matches.

1. Don't be afraid to REST in pvp Especially if you are a recon and have bionics, rest is pretty easy to use. You might suggest that 10 seconds and power loss isn't much better than dying, but you want to save your BOOST. If you stay alive you get more shatters, bubbles, smashes and healing, which can easily win you a point.

Need to fix this one voldy, I played a lot of lowbie recently and notice people resting in mid combat thinking its like a normal heal. Should mention it not only slows you but you take increased damage and deal a lot less damage when you pop it. It really should only be used if no medic is around and you're safe from any type of combat.

100% correct you are right. My inspiration for this was that I spent like a month never using rest when I first started because I knew of the penalty. Yeah lowbie people are using rest in the middle of being IC'd. Should have thought of it. Thanks

Making it harder for enemies to shoot you makes it harder for a player to get a heal beam attached to you, too. Even if the medic is failing, yelling at him won't help you. I know that many medic will specifically NOT heal you if you're calling them a loser in the game.

true and true i was in a scramble once and had a sniper picking me off every time i got close to point as a medic and once i respawned and the beacon was in the dropship so i picked it up and started heading to point about midway there the point changed and i was too low on power to fly to next ship so i landed for a second on a side ship then started for the new point with the beacon, some dude starts screaming about how i suck because i'm not getting any healing done and goes look at him just standing there with the beacon *i was flying at that moment* i looked up to see who was talking said screw you dropped the beacon right in the middle of the map and didn't give him a single heal the rest of the match which i seemed to stay alive a bit more in from that point on.
