Post Map Feedback - Air Arena
Someone needed to make it

submit feedback and terrain glitches below

Quote:
When you find a terrain glitch press [ to bring up the quick console and type 'bugit'. Looking at the input.ini file, bugit also appears to be bound to F12 by default.
bugit will generate a creenshot and a text log that the dev team can use to find the exact spot on the map that was the problem. Posting this info in the map section is FAR more helpful than "X is buggy as s***, hirez, you f*** suck at making maps"

The bugit logs are located in *\Documents\My Games\Tribes Ascend\TribesGame\ScreenShots\<MapName> You'll need to use something to downsize the file in order to upload it to the forum (mine are ~6meg each. stupid .bmp's) I use Irfanview (free) and the "save for web" option to get them down to around 250k.

When posting this information, it helps to use the following format:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
<brief description of what you were doing/where you were going>
<text dump of the log file (using quote or code tags helps)>
Code:
[1051.03] Log: Log file open, 11/10/11 12:53:41
[1051.03] Log: Dumping BugIt data chart at 2011.11.10-12.53.41 using build 7748 built from changelist 742347
[1051.03] Log: MapName: TrCTF-Drydock
[1051.03] Log: Description:
[1051.03] Log: BugItGo 30345.4434 -23603.0293 6076.5356 -8846 3403 0
[1051.03] Log: ?BugLoc=30345.44,-23603.03,6076.54?BugRot=-8846,3403,0

remember that you can also use bugit to get exact map positions for mesh and texture errors as well

**notes for the rest of this thread**
What I'm looking for here is map-specific feedback and bugs. Comments on the game mode itself just clutter up this thread. I have no control over the design, so posting complaints about the Arena playstyle isn't very helpful to me. I'm looking for bugs, aesthetics comments, and gameplay suggestions that I can work on myself or pass along to the art team.

I like how the actual level is designed, although the walkways may be a little too thin because I was getting pathetically easy grenade kills left and right.

The sky is horribly bright to the point of being disorienting. Is the sun 15 miles away from the surface of the planet? It's incredibly difficult to see anything above the horizon at all. Something keeps pushing me around in midair too. I couldn't find any sort of trigger or pattern to it, but I was busy being blinded by the sky and shot at by 5 guys so it was hard to look for any sort of indicator of when I was about to get flung sideways.

^^ This is an example of a good feedback with bugs that I can research, and aesthetic suggestions that I can pass long to the art team.

Please, help me help you with *maps*, as there are plenty of other threads dedicated to thoughts on the gamemode.

(also, there will be other maps in the future that will contain terrain, be indoor, experiment with different layouts. The two current pitfall maps are simply the two that made it through the arting process first)

Post Re: Map Feedback - Air Arena
This is more of a general Arena comment in general.

I led 2 arena teams in Tribes 2, and for me the appeal of arena was the threat of death, and that constant feeling of "I have the flag", without a flag.

The current version of arena scrubs that constant threat of death, and as such it's a more casual death match experience than a tense, high pressure stake. I do think it should go back to the Tribes 2 route of no health regeneration, no tac strikes [maps are way too small for this, but that's what second round ends up being], 7v7, reduce the number of inventory stations, etc.

Comments on "Air Arena" are as follows:

The map is slightly scaled down from Tribes 2's Aeroena [or more like Elmo's Aeroena]. This makes jetting around the map feel a bit stranger, particularly back and forth within a straight section, and it adds a difficulty escaping from the doombringer's chaingun of doom. Doombringers camping on the bottom have a significantly easier time than they would have if the map was scaled at 100% to the T2 version. This is because all the openings where you can attack one are very very tiny, and end up making it harder for you to hit the DB than the DB to hit you. Frankly, it's strange to have the heavies even involved in arena.

I like the aesthetic of air arena alot, other then that i generally loathe the arena mode since its basically TDM for dummies.

I really hope for an air arena themed CTF and TDM map, with less falling off the edge potential (should still be quite a bit).

I honestly don't find it very fun when people (me included) just keep falling off the map, either because they moved without looking or just got thrown off by a blast. There's less dueling because people are dying due to the map design. I really don't like it. Death due to stage hazards should be eliminated entirely. It adds absolutely nothing positive to the experience.

Maybe you can add some nice hills to ski on in case you fall down, so that you can throw yourself back in action in spectacular fashion. That would be fun. Be creative and add some interesting dynamic that involves movement.

Pay attention, in 4 matches (the only games i played before i got sick of TDM-for-dummies) of air arena i only fell off 3 times, two were from enemies knocking me off while i was low on energy, and the third was because my brother thought it would be hilarious to bump my hand while i was in a jetting between walkways which spun me around and got me confused enough that i missed the platform.

Hell, i even do alot of skii'ing around the arena to help avoid shots.

In regards to tac/orb striking - I really like how the grates in the middle of the paths on Air Arena don't count as surfaces. Or if they do, it's a very fine, hard to paint surface. This actually makes tac striking difficult in a pinch, and I gave up a kill or two wondering why my tacs weren't going down. +1 to that detail.

I'm a big fan of the Arena mode. Much funner than pubbing TDM, and the maps are actually pretty awesome. Thanks, Hirez.

I think the 'stage deaths' are a nice addition. It's not all about midairs and disc duels - watch where you ski.

I don't like how you can just fire across the map with automatic weapons like AR, SMG and especially chaingun(!). There is nothing preventing them from doing it, since there are no real obstacles blocking their line of fire. This is particularly annoying when you are the one playing projectile weapons, there is nothing you can do when they fire at you from the other side and discourages you to play anything without one of these weapons. It's kind of sad because I feel like it's not the point of Arena that you cowardly fire from a large distance without risking anything.

And I'm sorry but chaingun in these arena map should be taken out, it's a dam disgrace to the game mode. People just spamming them without effort is sucking the fun right out of the match.
