Post [Hopeless Request] Static Meshes
So, a small group of us are going to make a map for T:A using UDK. We have a hopeless dream of someday porting it in to a proper T:A format. Also, we intend to simply give the map to hi-rez free of charge when we complete it(assuming we finish it, we're in very early stages and just planning layout and art style right now).

Having said this, is there any chance of getting access to use of the T:A static meshes, under a some kind of license that allows us to develop with them under the condition that anything containing them is hi-rez's intellectual property or something?

It would be nice and help us make a map that's more in keeping with the artistic direction currently employed in TA, but, if not, we'll make what we can, and it will be yours to use if you like, Hi-Rez.

Toodle pip, And no, I don't actually except a reply.

TIP: The Unreal Editor's package system is not forwards-compatible. Without modifying the package system, it is not possible to open a package that was created/saved in a version newer than the one you are using. If you were to create a package using the latest UDK release, Hi-Rez would likely not be able to open it with the Unreal Editor they use for T:A.

The package version used by Tribes: Ascend and the January 2011 UDK release are exact matches (PackageVersion 805), minus the LicenseePackageVersion flag (licensed users get LicenseePackageVersion 2 while the UDK can only open "0"). They should be able to open any packages created with the January 2011 version or older with next to no difficulties.

Thanks for the heads up, I guess I'll install an older version of UDK.

Guess we'll just need to roll our own meshes.

It was a super long shot without signing several contracts.

They say "Maybe later" on things like this, but in all honesty, it's not likely.

We're completely fine with signing contracts guaranteeing them ownership. Also, I'm gonna use this thread to present updates to the project for anyone interested.

my understand was that HiRez would have to sign the contracts with epic, not you having to sign a contract with hi rez

could be wrong though

Quite the opposite if the packages are meant for the UDK as described. Epic Games would have no involvement if it was just Hi-Rez Studios giving Tribes: Ascend assets into the hands of a few community members. They would do all they legally could to keep them from being distributed beyond those few if they actually went/go for the idea.

It's not beyond the realm of possibility. People were planning and building mods/maps/skins/whatever for Red Orchestra 2 using a specific UDK release long before the game was in any playable form outside Tripwire Interactive.
