Post Server Browser
We are looking seriously at removing the "Quick Join" functionality in the game and replacing it with a server browser.

Use this thread to comment on:

    1) Whether or not you think this is a good direction.

    2) What changes or enhancements to the current Custom Server browser would be useful/needed as we made this transition.

    3) What changes or enhancements to the Custom Server configuration capabilities would you be interested in as we made this transition?

Big sweeping ideas are useful and will be of course be considered, but in the immediate term we will most value tactical suggestions (i.e., things that are a reasonable amount of work so we can turn this feature set around to you fairly quickly).

Troll and low-value add responses will be deleted in order to help keep the thread somewhat tidy.

I am 100% for a server browser, but I do think it would be a good idea to place a "quick join" button somewhere on the browser. There are those that just wish to play a match and will sooner quit the game than look for a perfect server.

I believe the Quick-Join function should locate and find the best appropriate server.

Don't get rid of it, just have it pool into the available servers.

Many people are used to Quick-Join functions, so getting rid of it might not be a good idea, however, using it to pool people into servers, and then allowing people to view which server they went to, IS a good idea in my opinion.

Any thoughts?

No, i'm not bad. Some people can just recreate bugs easier than others.

No offense, I just thought this was hilarious.

Haha, looks like Limyc more or less agrees, I think.

is there a good reason to remove it? maybe it can be relocated to inside the browser. keep the same functionality.(generally)

YES +++++ ++++++1
its a great direction to go in!!! theres threads on this im sure youve harvested and read up on - and im happy to add my text on another one.

take a look at previous game browsers - this is the nfo that needs to be included.
ping, player names, region, gametype, icon for friends in game, EVERYTHING that helps one choose a game, everything you can think of. include it.

Dont forget to let players SORT this nfo!!!!

this is also a great time to add ingame CHAT - im talking global - as in T2 - drop in the irc module - or similar. we feel isolated, and we are.

the same data/stats should apply to customs as well. imo the custom server "browser" isint really a true browser - its more of a list, since its sooo lacking in functionality.

customs should be included right in the server browser - there should be ONE single browser, unified. why should there be more than one? with the correct setup and filters, 1 is enough - this also brings customs out of the hole and onto the shovel.

it would be a painfull mistake if the browser was some similar clone to the custom "browser" - since its useless'ish.

play T2/UT2kblah and see how its done

I do wonder if Skill-Based Matchmaking might be better though.

New players would still get destroyed if they joined a server with good players.

There needs to be a way to more accurately measure skill so players know which server is best for them.

like you say, they will STILL get.... --- still. so, nothing changes?
noobs should be looked after, but lets not forget seasoned players and what we NEED.

-----
lets give the human players a quarter ounce of credit to choose their own games
theres many easy ways to let them measure their choice of game.
errr... lets let them choose to join the server labelled - NOOBIES ONLY

or servers that are restricted to a certain level

or servers that are filtered for blah.... etc...

servers they see their noob friends in
-------------

theres no reason to s*** on a server browser - noobies or not - i think it would be even more friendly to noobs for the aforementioned reasons.

------

browser would push my gaming to the next level - of happiness.

Right, but noobs need a safe haven to get good enough before they face the pro players.

The current ranking system doesn't work because skill is mostly independent of time played. There would need to be new systems of ranking to allow those who aren't good to play in peace, so griefers don't just show up and destroy everyone.

Furthermore, even if a noob plays enough, he shouldn't be forced into the pro-pool because, again, just because he's played a lot doesn't mean he's any good.

We need to be able to set upgrade limits as a server flag, instead of all or nothing.

TWL has been running Mk2 limits for a while but it's hard to enforce, meaning we couldn't implement it in PUGs or Tournaments even if we wanted to.

Also weapon restrictions would be very nice, though I understand that can be tricky when some players only have defaults. If we wanted to make an explosives-only server, some players may only have the soldier AR, for example.
