Post Call-In Replacement Idea
To preface - I don't think this will get any attention from HiRez; I don't really expect it to. They've made the game they want to make, and we have some issues with that, but such is life. This thread is more for anyone who might be considering making a Tribes-like game or mod, or just for people who like to pointlessly ponder "could-have-beens."

We all agree that the strike call-ins are absolutely awful. What if instead of these, there were armor buffs you could "call-in" with credits, which were not stackable? It's easier to provide some examples than to attempt a general explanation:

1. Reflective Armor - 2000 credits. An activatable ability; when activated, the next hitscan shot to strike the player is reflected back to its source, dealing full damage to the source. The hit uses up this ability.

2. Ammo pouch - 1000 credits. Doubles the ammo pool for your primary and secondary weapons until you die. As an activatable ability, you can throw this as a nugget for other team mates, at which point you lose the benefits of the ammo pouch and they gain it, along with some ammo.

3. Electrohull Armor - 3500 credits. Your armor courses with ELF energy, reaching out and zapping nearby enemies to drain a little of their energy and deal minor damage over a 3 meter radius around you until you die.

4. ECM Package - 500 credits. Tells you when you are in-range of enemy radar and causes missiles to take 1 second longer to lock on, even if you are in a vehicle. Spotting you can't be done except if you are detected by their pulse sensor. Lasts until you die.

5. Cybrid Virus Deployer - 5000 credits. You carry a small computer loaded with a complex Cybrid virus into the battlefield, which you can insert into enemy vehicles and deployables that you touch. It disables vehicles for 10 seconds, turns turrets of all kinds on friend and foe alike, and renders sensors and inventory stations inoperative. When it is used you lose this ability.

All very good, seemingly balanced ideas.

If we could get this and maybe the laser pointer it would be the cat meow or how you say it.

Lol, thanks for the support, graphical or otherwise. Does anyone have any criticisms?

I'm guessing some of those you couldn't use more than once before you die? Like the ammo pouch, if you had like 10 000 you could be shooting the Doombringer gun without pause for the rest of the game.

And would you need to buy these things in the inventory place or could you just do it anywhere?

I'd also like to know how you'd obtain these modifications/packages.

Would they be call-ins, i.e. drops down like an Inv Station then you pick it up, or would it be you buy it by hitting the number keys then pick it up at the next Inv Station you use, or maybe pick it up next time you spawn, or would it be some kind of magical push button and instantly get it thing?

Also although the Cybrid Virus seems like it could be very potent, balanced by a heavy pricetag, do you really have to "touch" the deployable/vehicle to use it? That might make it pretty worthless due to how difficult it would be to apply.
I'd think it'd need some kind of thrown sticky-grenade-like deployment system.

Wait, why are you still reading? It should be obvious that this signature is pointless and just here to be green.
Stop reading already! You're procrastinating too much!

Yeah, as I said in the OP these would not be stackable - so you could only have 1 at a time, and that would even go across all types, so that you could only have 1 of ANY of these at a time. Good question.

I've always imagined that they would be bought just like you buy a tactical strike now - you have to sit around with a computer in your hands for a few seconds, dialing in the "recipe" or whatever you would need to do instead of using the laser target system, but it could be done anywhere.

They would be call-ins bought with credits. After a delay you would instantly get the modification. Perhaps an aura of light or smoke around you, to show your position while you're doing it just like how the laser for the strikes points you out. Then some kind of effect on your character to indicate that you have the mod equipped. The delay is there so that you have to at least preconceive of their use by a little bit, instead of getting them in the middle of combat.

The mods I wrote above are just examples of what might be; the details don't really matter (especially since HiRez won't implement this). It's just my way of explaining what they would be like with concrete examples, instead of trying to communicate general principles which can sometimes be misinterpreted more easily. I guess in my mind that mod would have to actually physically touch its target. Not that hard if you're an inf ;P
