Post Classic Arena (PTH, SLD, JUG)
I play Arena as a Pathfinder. When people are using primarily automatic weapons, I change over to a Juggernaut. I'm not one to complain, but there was a particularly bad round of Arena where 90% of the combatants were using automatic weapons. As I'm taking fire from a Doombringer and a Technician, I have an epiphany: A classic style Arena with just the basic classes.

  • No Technician, and their turrets.
  • No Doombringer, with their Gatling gun.
  • No Infiltrator, with their Jackal or Sticky Grenades.
  • No Sentinel, standing on the outskirts sniping.
  • No Raider, with the Plasma Gun or ARX Buster.

You still have the Light Assault Rifle and the Assault Rifle, but they're standard. In Starsiege: Tribes, you played Arena primarily with mines, discs and the chaingun. Some people would use the ELF or sniper rifle, but it was uncommon. I think an Arena line-up with access only to the three basic classes, Pathfinder, Soldier, and Juggernaut would be immensely popular.

That's certainly in the realm of possibility, but I'd still love to see it as an officially backed game type. There's something pleasant about being able to join any game in progress, opposed to joining the same server, or seeking out the same server types.

I don't think it's good for any game mode to limit classes. I'd rather have the game be balanced properly instead. But yeah, with custom servers you can do what you want.

I think Arena in Starsiege: Tribes was Light only. It may have had Medium, too. Light was a far superior dueling class in that game, though. And everyone was using the same strength disc launcher. I love Arena, it just gets boring when you have three Doombringers on the other side, and Soldiers with Assault Rifles.
