As far as I can tell, the purpose of the sabre is to let people who can't aim feel like they're helping, without actually influencing the match.

If so, I think we can all agree there's not a thing about it that should change.

The Missile launcher is the go-to anti-vehicle weapon (particularly aircraft) when you can't get them in effective range for your other weapons. The goal wasn't to outright destroy them, but overwhelm them with a threat they can't ignore. The Vehicle Energy system from T2 also had the added benefit of depth to risk assessment, where you could power your afterburners, your shields, or your weapons, but using one weakens the others.

The shields also added a unique dynamic to combat, where the total damage required to kill a target scales with both DPS and spike damage. A high DPS lets you outpace the shields to inflict hull damage, but spike damage can let you accomplish the same goal at a lower DPS or RoF.
