Post This .ini setting needs to be an in-game menu option ASAP.
(Note: Please see the reddit thread: http://www.reddit.com/r/Tribes/comments ... astically/ for immediate feedback. Below is a copy/paste)

Before you read the following fix, I'd like to ask one main thing in the following responses:

ASK HI REZ TO INCLUDE THIS AS AN IN-GAME MENU OPTION.

My basic understanding of the below fix is as follows: Essentially, UE3 by default decides to lag mouse inputs in exchange for better frame rate. It's a setting that while not a big deal for console games, is a huge deal for PC games.

By turning the OneFrameThreadLag setting to false, you'll notice an immediate and sudden improvement in how your mouse feels in game. This is because your direct input is no longer delayed by X amount of frames.

Please note though, that as mentioned above, this does come at a frame rate penalty. If you're on a PC that can barely play T:A in its current form, this fix might make the game unplayable. If you're on a more modern PC, you shouldn't have a noticable frame hit.

Fix is below this line.

Go to:

C:\Users*YOUR PC NAME*\Documents\My Games\Tribes Ascend\TribesGame\Config

Open:

Tribes.ini

Insert under DirectionalLightMaps=True the following:

"OneFrameThreadLag=False" (without " marks)

Save the ini.

Enjoy drastically increased mouse responsiveness.

Really does work, just tried it out. I think the comp. guys could appreciate this.

OneFrameThreadLag is set "TRUE" by default specifically for NET lag. It determines whether to allow the rendering thread of T:A to lag one frame behind the game thread, which compensates for slow connections or high latency/ping issues.

While it DOES in fact help with mouse responsiveness, please realize that the side effect may result it worse lag at times.

EXAMPLE OneFrameThreadLag=TRUE

You're on a 16v16 CTF match and the game starts to studder a bit. OneFrameThreadLag will allow it to receive data from the previous "frame" and smoothly transition to the current "frame", thus reducing studder during the catch-up game.

EXAMPLE OneFrameThreadLag=FALSE

You're on a 16v16 CTF match and the game starts to studder a bit. Without OneFrameThreadLag on, the previous receive data from the previous "frame" is disregarded and will immediately render the current frame. This results in you "jumping" from one place to another more often.

i cant wait to try it out. this isnt just something that reduces menu mouse latency is it? but also in game latency?
if so, good stuff zp.

now please help me find out why any smoke effect absolutely destroys frame rates.

i know that certain .ini settiongs simply cannot be in game menu options, because they are read and set when the game starts up.

this seems to me like it would be one of those

This could easily be set as an in-game menu option. It is not startup specific.

edit:

Also, (even though its not) - for the sake of argument that you were right. It's not really hard to have a setting with a prompt of "you must restart your game for changes to take effect."

Either way, no reason why it can't be a menu option, particularly when it's such a big impact setting.

Even if that is the case and it requires a restart, most games handle that by, you know, telling you that the change you just made won't take effect until you restart...

I cannot stress how important it is to have crucial things like this in the UI.

I live in Edmonton, a city with a very active local gaming scene and as such spend a lot of time playing at a local LAN center here (I have a great PC at home but playing with people in the same room as you is just more fun) - you can't make changes to things like .ini files on LAN center machines (for obvious vandalism and security reasons).

The idea of "you can tweak it in the .ini" doesn't work for anyone a) without the knowledge to do so or b) without the ability to do so in situations like the above. For a lot of the little tweaks it's not huge, but for something as significant as this it's absolutely necessary.
