Nice work SmoothP, let's hope they actually listen.

I do agree somewhat with Mabeline though, there are already too many double up guns (infil smg, tech smg, ar) Why can't the AR S/M/L just be something like an automatic pistol/smg/ar.

The SMG and AR are completely different guns in L2.0, they aren't just minor variations of each other.

The AR fires small projectiles with high velocity, low damage, and long range. It's excellent for chases / long range duels, but lacks the stopping power for in your face brawling. The shotgun can shred face in close quarters due to its large, high damage, low velocity projectiles, but has little range. The SMG is the "all rounder", with medium velocity, medium damage, and medium range.

And bigger versions of a plasma weapon don't change damage per shot, cyclic rate, or projectile speed, they just let you fire longer. You can think of plasma weapons as having magazines that slowly refill themselves, with heavier versions refilling themselves faster. Upsizing a particular weapon in L2.0 doesn't make it a whole new gun, it just gives the weapon a slight boost.

P.S. I'd be totally fine with getting rid of the SMG... but somehow I don't think Hi-Rez would be.

I wish HiRez would even grace us with their presence. I feel like they come down from their golden mountain top just to say pointless one liners all the time.

They do listen, you just need a big enough fish for them to respond...

God, if only we were in some kind of pre-launch phase where the developers could respond to feedback from players. Some kind of "closed" event where we could preform tests on mechanics and ideas. Maybe that "closed" event could even have some player-suggested mechanics as well.

Hang on, I think I might be on to something big here.

+Support.

The only downside I see to this is that a lot of players have put money into the game, and rolling back VIP time and gold would probably take a lot of time. Still, it'd be well worth it in my opinion. I wouldn't mind starting over completely for this system. Also:

Iron Wall
  • Heavy Armor
  • Repair Gun (XL)
  • SMG (S)
  • Shield Pack (S)
  • Force Field (M, x2)
Duties
  • Put up a lot of annoying force fields and keep them maintained.

I do not agree with the current class system, perk/skill tree system as it is, right now. But this.....this sounds like were getting somewhere.

+1

+1 it's not perfect, but I think it's on the path to something amazing.

No, i'm not bad. Some people can just recreate bugs easier than others.

No offense, I just thought this was hilarious.

It should be taken as a sign that, given how much SmoothP and I disagree on some things, I don't think he's that far off on this. Whether Loadouts 2.0 is the way to go or some other system of customization is chosen really doesn't matter - the point is that this community's discussion keeps returning to the concept of customizable loadouts because not having it is a step back in terms of putting emergent power into the hands of the players, AND from where we are standing it seems like customizable loadouts would actually MAKE HiRez more money. Hey, we could be wrong, but I don't think so.

Hey, man, we only really disagree on health regen. 8-)

There are some questions I have concerning Loadouts 2.0 for ya, though SmoothP - although to be honest I'll just say right now that it's mostly to keep this topic bumped at the top of the stack for as long as possible; these are just quibbles:

1. If HiRez has players pay for weapon size, then doesn't that make this a "pay to win" system? I mean, the other option would be to pay OR earn through experience, but then this system makes my Tribes into something that too closely resembles an RPG for my liking (I'm all for RPGs in general, but not when I want everyone to be able to compete on the same level. Such a game should not rely on players grinding over long periods of time; it's apt to induce frustration).

Because of the weight limits, every loadout would be theoretically balanced, but different loadouts would be better in certain situations than others. And it would be no more P2W than the current system. Having more loadouts, items, and custom slots unlocked would give you more flexibility to do different things, but you'd still only be doing one thing at at time.

2. The energy packs are doing regen instead of adding to the pool - is that how it was in T1 and T2, or did you change their mechanics to avoid their abuse with the Phase rifle? I honestly don't remember how it was right now, but I'm remembering that they gave you a little of both in the previous games?

The old energy packs affected regen. Or else they would only give a small befenit unless you were using energy really slowly and letting it top off. This means that energy packs increase your effective RoF with energy weapons, but it also means you're giving up other potential advantages.

3. Reusing models for weapons with different stats is a little worrying, because one generally relies on the visual appearance/behavior of an item in a game to understand how to counter it when it is in the hands of the enemy. This system could therefore conceivably result in a reduction of skill from the game, because it wouldn't be possible to "know" the enemy as well as before. Clever use of skins/minor model/animation changes could pretty much solve this. I'm reminded of Borderlands handled this sort of proliferation.

Schottingham suggested different color schemes on the weapon weights, this is a great idea, and would work across the different weps. Something along the lines of S = black / green, M = black / yellow, L = black / red would be great, and if done well could even more visible than different models.

Rarely would I give my 100% support for anyone's ideas other than my own, however, given that my head is full of cotton wool, I support SmoothP for president of Hi-Rez.
